February Discovery Table: Hearts

February Heart Discovery Table

So, February's Discovery table focuses on the big event this month: Valentine's Day. There are three red table-coverings of differing pattern and texture. We made cinnamon apple sauce hearts after seeing them on Lulastic's blog and have hung them with baker's twine on our twig tree. The Girls convinced me to buy various hanging birds in the post-Christmas decoration sale which now hang there too. When I made my heart mobile, I also made quick … [Read more...]

How to make a bunny rabbit from a pipe cleaner

pipe-cleaner bunny rabbit

This is a really simple pipe-cleaner bunny rabbit that you can make with children of all ages and is perfect for Easter. First, take your pipe cleaner and fold over at the middle. You want to make a loop that will become the head about the size of a walnut shell. Twist to hold the shape. You should then be left with two long end pieces which will become the ears. Fold each one in half back on itself and twist to secure the ends. Once you … [Read more...]

{Recipe} Apple Heart Tarts.

valentine's apple tart hearts

I saw this super idea on Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom and fell in love. So today, I rolled out a sheet of puff pasty and cut out four large hearts using my heart cutter. You could cut any size you like obviously, since these pies are individual-sized tarts. Next I laid a pair of hearts on a baking sheet (Lakeland's I Can Cook range, since you ask.) I piled on a couple of dessert spoons of apple sauce. From the remaining pair of … [Read more...]

{Review} UGG slippers

snUGG feet

Sometimes I love blogging. Like the day when it starts bucketing down with snow and I take delivery of a pair of slippers. Not just any slippers, either, but UGG slippers. I can feel the jealousy. I totally get it. But before you condemn me, can I tell you that these UGG slippers were sent to me because the wonderfully kind Karin of Cafe Bebe nominated me to receive a pair in the hopes that it would brighten my day. And they really … [Read more...]

3-D heart mobile from recycled magazines

Valentine 3-D heart mobile from recycled magazine

To keep the Girls occupied at Granny's house recently, we cut out lots of hearts from the December edition of various magazines. This was a great opportunity to hunt through for reds and pinks and glittery gold pages, so a good exercise in colour-identifying for Dimples. The Girls also worked on co-ordination and general motor skills feeding the paper into the heart cutters. Whilst it was a super activity, I've since been puzzling what to … [Read more...]

Impossible to escape the poverty trap

Children Society petition for Free School Meals

We all know that times are tough: recent cuts have already forced huge numbers of families to tighten their belt. More families will struggle this year  to pay for food, heating and the other basics for their children as prices continue to increase. And if you play the game on the Children's Society website, you will quickly find that it is impossible to escape the poverty trap. The Fair and Square Campaign has a simple plan: a free school … [Read more...]
