You have to admit that there is nothing greater than hurtling full speed towards a Bank Holiday when the sun is in the sky and the grass is green and it feels like finally- FINALLY- you may be beyond the long wet winter. It also makes you look with despair at garden paths, driveways, patios- even cars- with a heavy heart. The long wet winter has taken it's toll on them too, and somehow in the bright sun the whole look is "casual neglect". I … [Read more...]
April 2014
I've been taking a photo a day- Project 365- again this year, though publishing them in one-month-chunks. This is what April looks like. 1. Finally our Frozen DVD arrives! 2. One plait, one bunch. Never one to walk the path well-trodden, my little Dimpled One. 3. A well-loved, well-used apron. Given to me a long time ago by people who knew me better than I know myself. Domestic Goddess. 4. Bird Song Fine China from Katie Alice
Living in a woodland area, there are a lot of birds. Consequently there is a lot of bird song that wakes us in the mornings. As it starts at 4:30am it's often no more welcome than my alarm which goes at 6:20am, but it is a lovely replacement to the noises of urban life- the sirens and beeping and car stereos- that we used to have. Thrifty Sausagemeat Pie- Morrisons Budget-busting prices
The Bank holiday turned out to be a glorious weekend: good because I had a lot of mouths to feed. We had friends various over for most of the weekend so I needed to make our food shop go a long way. The Bank Holiday also heralded the start of a new, cheaper, Morrisons. They’ve cut the prices on over a thousand of your favourite products: these are new every day low prices on the things you buy every week. Although we’re cutting prices, … [Read more...]
Dairy Free Paleo Ice Cream
Whilst house-sitting over half term, The Mothership chopped up our ripe bananas and put them in the freezer. She read about it in one of my many recipe books. When she told me she what she had done, she reminded me that she used to make ice-cream like that when we were children. We were living in Belgium at the time and I'm sure that there's a story about accidentally buying buttermilk instead of milk because of the language barrier, which … [Read more...]
Childhood running free: our holiday in Northern Norway
Up until recently we were living in the centre of a busy London Borough on a main road. My children never went beyond the front door without me. They never ventured beyond my line of sight. This, more than anything, is the experience that has informed all our holiday decisions. We go camping, stay on farms, walk along beaches. We give them experiences: the chance to run free, barefoot, past their bedtime. The chance to feed lambs in their pjs. … [Read more...]
