Can I just say that my mother-in-law has changed my life? They were down a couple of weeks ago and, being parents, didn't come empty-handed. I love presents (who doesn't) and got even more excited when she handed me a Lakeland bag. I love Lakeland. So I was a happy bunny before I even tried out the exciting gift, which turned out to be a Mango splitter. On it's own, it does look a little scary, and rather large. But you know what a nightmare … [Read more...]
Guest Post: The Mothership
Guest Post: The Mothership on life in the UK It's not just the speed of driving and the volumes of traffic in the UK that scare me, I panic now when I enter a supermarket here. I am over-awed at the out-of-town shopping facilities available now and the sheer array of foodstuff . I find no pleasure in having to make a choice from 20 types of washing powder or 25 different breakfast cereals. Neither do I find joy in being able to buy … [Read more...]
Peanut Butter Cookies
I was at Lady W's again on Thursday, so she could go kiteboarding/househunting. The great news is that the Jigsaw Fiend is really making eye contact and smiling and, more importantly, has cracked the potty training. He is an absolute joy to be around. Whilst he was being tutored and Smiley Crawler was taking a brief (a very precise 45 minutes- he doesn't like to miss anything!) nap, I took the opportunity to use up some of the gluten-free flour … [Read more...]
Mascarpone- stuffed pork fillet
I bought a green exercise book when I was 19 in which I used to write recipes that I had tried, using other people's cook books because I couldn't afford my own. If they were good enough, they went in the book, and thus I built a great collection of recipes that really worked. For reasons I have been unable to fathom the book, and thus my most treasured recipes, has gone AWOL. I am quite desperate to find it again and am now having to conjure … [Read more...]
Martini prawns and pasta
A friend cut this recipe for Martini prawns and pasta out of the Standard about a thousand years ago. I lost the actual details ages ago so I cook it from memory. The original called for chopped smoked salmon instead of prawns and Martini rather than white wine, but this version works just as well. I'm having it for my supper. Serves 2. Ingredients: 6 RipeTomatoes Fresh pasta About 20 or so large prawns, peeled (I buy … [Read more...]
I feel crap, there’s a reason, and I’ll get over it.
I've always been crap at lying. You know how there are people who, if you ask how they are, convincingly say "I'm great!" and then six months later you find out that their cat died and their boyfriend left them for another man on the same day and you had absolutely no clue from the way she was acting. That's not me. I remember being really upset on meeting someone new once when I was at Uni- apparently they had been warned that "Kelly … [Read more...]
Potatoes a la Rustique
DH doesn't cook that much these days, now that he has a full-time wife. But every so often when the will takes him, he forcibly evicts me from the kitchen, makes all kinds of mess and produces something wonderful, as with Potatoes a la Rustique. Ingredients: As many potatoes as you need, cleaned. Handful fresh rosemary Handful garlic cloves Olive oil and a little butter Method: Put a good glob of olive oil into ovenproof dish. Pop in … [Read more...]
