I seem to be using this place as a store for my recipes. In need of something to do with the remainder of a Waitrose rotisserie chicken (I bloody hate serving leftover meat sliced with baked potatoes and salad), I threw this together last night in a smug-Nigella-fashion, from ingredients I keep in stock. Seriously- I could be her body double, except she looks voluptuous and I just look dumpy. And I don't have her money...Thai Green Bean … [Read more...]
And you thought it was just for putting on chips.
I found this thread recently and thought I would try a few out, since I already use White Vinegar to help keep my washing machine scale-free, my towels soft, and to clean out difficult-to-clean things. Feel free to add your own tips, if you are that way inclined!!!Removing Stains: An equal mixture of salt and white vinegar will clean coffee and tea stains from china cups.Loosen tough stains: To loosen hard-to-clean stains in glass, aluminum or … [Read more...]
Is it Shepherd’s Pie if it’s made with beef?
I remember that my mother used to tell a story about one of my uncles, who had come to visit my newly married parents. She spent all day cooking something very 70's like Coq-au-Vin (not that there's anything wrong with that, you understand) only to have my uncle ask for brown sauce. Before he had even tasted her offering. I had a similar experience with DH. shortly after moving in with him, I discovered he ate pretty much everything except … [Read more...]
Mercy
I have always loved reading, have always been encouraged by my parents to read. I never really thought that there was a right and wrong thing to read until I was thirteen and had my books confiscated by Matron. She deemed Danielle Steel to be inappropriate (yet she left Judy Blume's Forever, which to my mind was much racier....) reading material, despite the fact that I had been dispatched back to school with a job lot of said fiction by my … [Read more...]
Summer Fruit Crumble
All summer I have been buying as many soft fruits I can, and eating them at every opportunity. I enjoy strawberries, blackberries, raspberries, blueberries and the like so much more than the dull orange that you get in winter. Plus they are seasonal, locally sourced and therefore much better on the old carbon footprint. A lunch with the rentals a few weeks ago reminded me that I had yet to make a Summer Pudding this year. So I bought all the … [Read more...]
Hopscotch and Handbags- Lucy Mangan
By the way, for those of you still to go on your summer holiday, you can buy a copy of 'Handbags and Hopscotch: the Essential Guide to Being a Girl' here, written by my wonderfully talented friend, Lucy Mangan. It's out in a couple of weeks. I've been invited to the Launch Party, though have no idea what one wears to that sort of thing. Don't want to go all Bridget Jones, in an inappropriate dress and babbling incomprehensively about Salman … [Read more...]
Songs full of memories
I have been racking my brains since I first started writing this blog, to come up with 20-30 oldies for the Steve Wright show. And I'm still no closer. Every time I hear a great song on the radio, I add it to my list, which now runs to three pages. I suppose the problem comes in determining what makes a great song. You could go on how many copies have been sold. Or you could go with the songs that mean the most to you. The soundtrack to your … [Read more...]
