The Good Wife Guide #1

Picture creditThe last time I wrote about a Wife-guide, I got into the kind of trouble you never expect, but that has the potential to divide a family until the end of time. In making a point, I didn't choose my words carefully enough and almost had to stop blogging altogether. So I have been reticent about this post.DH bought me this book for Christmas. Not, I hasten to add, as an insult or a pointer, but more because he thought it would be good … [Read more...]

Sweet spiced cookies on a snowy day.

When the snow is falling, I end up raiding the kitchen to find things to do with the Pocket Dictator. She loves being in her FunPod and helping me whilst I cook, so a lump of leftover pastry was the perfect thing to focus our attention on. In actual fact it was pastry that I used to make mince pies at Christmas, the leftovers of which I had just used to make a Mincemeat tart, so I've been feeling quite DG about the fact that I made something so … [Read more...]

A 2009 retrospective

You get to Christmas and when people have stopped talking about presents and shopping and asking "are you ready?" they ask the classic rhetorical question: where did this year go? I wondered the same thing at 4am when I was lying awake being kicked by the Jumping Bean. I didn't really get into blogging until late in the year, so figured I'd share 2009 with you:JanuaryThe last blog. Barack takes office and I go back to work, leaving the Pocket … [Read more...]

It’s started….he’s on his way.

It's that time of year again. DH has gone out with the PD to pick up the Turkey (and buy my gifts, no doubt). I'm at home, struck down by Tonsillitis, although even if I wasn't the remaining snow/ice would keep me indoors: I'm fairly confident that SPD and crutches do not go well with snow/ice. I've had a good feel of the few gifts under the tree that bear my name and the multitude we've received for the PD. And I'm being waited on by a plethora … [Read more...]

Dooce

I always expected to be a 'Mummy', certainly when pregnant I always talked about becoming a 'Mummy'. Yet somehow, from the moment that Cecily was born, I have been a 'Mamma'. I have spent 18 months calling myself Mamma, as has everyone else, so how is it that when she finally got round to referring to me by name the other day, I have become Mammy and sometimes Mummy? The PDs first word was Doddy (doggy), followed closely by Niddit (Nugget, aka the … [Read more...]

Christmas cheer with chocolate icing

One of the advantages of the SPD is that I am at home a lot more than I used to be and, because so much of the Domesticity is delegated to those more able, I can spend more time in the kitchen. This too is a complicated process since I cannot stand for too long, or walk carrrying heavy things, or get them in and out of the oven, so still need a lot of help. These cookies are fantastic for that reason. Whizz all the stuff in the Magimix, roll, … [Read more...]

Worst Christmas Gift Ever

I was standing in a very long queue at Waterstones yesterday, buying yet another dog-related product (in this case quite a sweet book at a very reasonable half-price) that the Pocket Dictator had tried to shoplift. No-one tells you the perils of pushchairs and low-lying shelves at your NCT classes do they? In order to avoid being 'nicked' I have spent a fortune on things I didn't want this winter to appease irate shopkeepers. Anyone would think I … [Read more...]
