Top Five Children’s Earworms

Yesterday I found myself humming The Archers' Theme tune ALL DAY, even when I woke coughing in the middle of the night. Not your standard earworm, I know, but it happens a lot. It's not unusual for me to be humming showtunes or hymns when I wake, and most of the time I'm not aware of it. I recently saw an article listing some of the top Earworm offenders, which included: Lady Gaga's Poker Face The Beatles rendition of  O-bla-di … [Read more...]

We’re Going on a Bear Hunt

I've written before about books and reading with children. In  fact I ran a competition to win some Charlie and Lola books and I'm delighted to say that they are winging their way to Red Ted Art even as we speak (as it were.) If  you didn't win, fear not, since there will be more books to give away very soon. World Book Day came and went without me really being aware of it, since I have been encumbered by a cold to rival the one that deprived … [Read more...]

The First Word

My children are a study in contrasts: one likes Marmite, the other hates it. She eats Peanut Butter which the Marmite-lover can't bear. Dimples has a cheese allergy yet Pocket Dictator will eat Baked Potato with cheese until it comes out of her ears. I had a thought that I would use the word opposite for my Gallery entry this week, in fact.   Then I had a better idea, since whilst they are so very different, my Girls also have something in … [Read more...]

Not a Tosser in sight.

Primarily because I unceasingly fail to toss them successfully, I always told people that I couldn't make pancakes. I couldn't bear the humiliation of scraping blobs of semi-cooked batter from ceilings, walls and pans. Then God gave me children. My children lack what seems to be the generally assumed love of the White Stuff bestowed upon most pre-schoolers. I have a friend whose children down two pints each before bed. Yes, each. Mine both … [Read more...]

Map Craft: paper mache elephant from old A-Z

Paper mache elephant from A-Z

I saw the most fabulous paper mache elephant at The Little Green Paintbox the other day and immediately ran out into the street where DH had put the recycling to be collected. What the bin man thought of the mad woman in her PJs, I've no idea, but I rescued my milk carton and set about following the instructions. I cut off the base of the carton, using the severed handle as a trunk, and cut two ears from cardboard, adding a tab the length of … [Read more...]

March is the month to…

A pinch and a punch for the first of the month, and all that jazz. And whilst I'm in the mood for (mis)quoting: Beware the Ides of March! March comes in like a lion and goes out like a lamb. I hope the second is true! Spring is in the air, which is presumably the reason that there are so many events in March. Of course there are lots of interesting and obscure events every month, but since I started this feature recently, I've yet to … [Read more...]
