It was Oscar Wilde that wrote "Memory... is the diary that we all carry about with us". I happen to have a very good memory for particular things: phone numbers, people's names, dates and so forth. It's less reliable whilst I am still having interrupted sleep, although I am reliably informed by a professional parent that this will change when I get some time to myself once The Girls go to school. In the meantime I carry a memory back-up, … [Read more...]
How to make a shell suncatcher
Continuing the alliteration with the last How To, along with the shell and paper plate theme, we also had fun making a shell suncatcher. Again, you need a paper plate with the centre cut out. Decorate it however you wish, since this forms the frame for the picture. You also need a piece of clear plastic. I used the plastic from a packet of some kind, but you could use OHP sheets or cellophane. Using a marker, draw a shell onto the plastic. we … [Read more...]
How to make a paper plate porthole picture
Try saying that after a couple of drinks: how to make a paper plate porthole picture, how to make a paper plate porthole picture. I'm exhausted just typing it, although that may have something to do with the fact that the Dimpled Assassin likes to start the day early, and when I say that, I mean a time with the number 5 in it. By the time we hit breakfast, I'm ready to go back to bed. That's probably why I like to get out with the Girls as … [Read more...]
Where were you on 9/11?
I walked into the lobby of the Ritz hotel looking for a good friend. We had arranged to meet there and enjoy the afternoon together before I moved to Germany the following day. As we left the building for his car he made some comment about a plane and the World Trade Centre. Across the road at an Arab airline there were people clustered round a television showing live pictures of a smoking building. But I was young and I was in London and I … [Read more...]
Death, Nutella and the best way to kill a mouse.
As I stepped bleary eyed into the Wet Room this morning, I checked the floor carefully. Walking barefoot in a house with potties stationed at every door and a recalcitrant dog who refuses to crap outside is always a risk so it pays to look where you are going. In this instance though, I wasn't scouting for crap as I let the dog out into the garden. I was on the hunt. One of the disadvantages of living in an old house, particularly an old house … [Read more...]
Shoe box
This week's Gallery request is shoes. I had lots of ideas: the Girls' First Shoes, which sit, framed, in their bedrooms; my well-worn sneakers, a result of training for Shine 2011 (incidentally, if you haven't please consider sponsoring me. The link is to your right); my favourite shoes, the ones I got married in; the first pair of shoes DH bought for me on our first romantic mini-break; the welly rack that sits by the back door. There is never a … [Read more...]
How to fill a large wall space
I briefly mentioned the dining room when talking about our resident seagull a few days ago. Keith inhabits one wall of the room, which has changed quite a lot in the past few months: the alcove shelving has been built, the walls have been painted (Farrow and Ball Chinese Blue in case you are curious) and I was given a beautiful French Dresser in February for our fifth wedding anniversary, which traditionally is represented by a gift in … [Read more...]
