Dooce

I always expected to be a 'Mummy', certainly when pregnant I always talked about becoming a 'Mummy'. Yet somehow, from the moment that Cecily was born, I have been a 'Mamma'. I have spent 18 months calling myself Mamma, as has everyone else, so how is it that when she finally got round to referring to me by name the other day, I have become Mammy and sometimes Mummy? The PDs first word was Doddy (doggy), followed closely by Niddit (Nugget, aka the … [Read more...]

Yes we can.

I don't know what the future will hold for Britain, for the United States and for the World, but I am glad that I am witness to such an extraordinary moment in America's past, present and future. … [Read more...]

I’ve got a dongle and I know how to use it!

I know that not a moment ago I was yabbering on about an idyllic childhood with little television, no internet and no mobile phones. And it really was idyllic. I also know that I yabbered on about being quite keen to keep DH from working when we retreated to our retreat. But then I realised that pretty much my whole life is tied to the internet in one form or another, and the fact that I am getting bigger by the day means that sometime soon I … [Read more...]

Guest Editor Strikes again

As I write, she has safely re-entered the atmosphere in Ethiopia, but she left a little something with me for all the lovely readers she seems to think I have!Christmas spent overseas has always meant, as well as those already invited to join us, a last minute trawl round on Christmas Day to find those Brits who have not been invited to eat Christmas dinner elsewhere. This has guaranteed a houseful of people, usually of the young, single and male … [Read more...]

Oh Christmas Tree, Oh Christmas Tree, How lovely are your branches?

Very lovely I'd say, festooned as they are with white bows, candy canes and a selection of white and clear glass baubles. I don't quite know where the time is going at the moment...I'm sure I blinked and suddenly we were in December. But I have managed to slow down enough to enjoy dressing our tree, sing some carols, feed the Christmas cake and get all the cards in the post...wonder if I'll be this organised next year with a small person to sit … [Read more...]

Songs full of memories

I have been racking my brains since I first started writing this blog, to come up with 20-30 oldies for the Steve Wright show. And I'm still no closer. Every time I hear a great song on the radio, I add it to my list, which now runs to three pages. I suppose the problem comes in determining what makes a great song. You could go on how many copies have been sold. Or you could go with the songs that mean the most to you. The soundtrack to your … [Read more...]
