Festive swear words on the Christmas Countdown

There have been a few extra bodies in our bed of late, and before you start thinking that you've tuned into the wrong blog and that it should be beyond the watershed, I refer to:1. The Wonder Hound, who whined so pitifully in the night because she was cold that we brought her into our room just to shut her up. She obligingly curled up under the duvet at the bottom of the bed to warm DHs toes.2. The Pocket Dictator, who woke up cold (not … [Read more...]

What to watch: Top Five Christmas Films

You've got to admit that it's really not Christmas without the Queen's Speech, the afternoon movies that you doze off through and the repeats of Only Fools and Horses. In fact I'd hazard a guess that the topic of Christmas television will be unavoidable in the next few weeks: either you will talk excitedly about things you are looking forward to, or you will moan wholeheartedly after the event about the rubbish on TV and how there were too many … [Read more...]

All I want for Christmas: a letter to Santa

Domestic Goddesque ManorThe Very Edge of SanitySouth East London Father Christmas, Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland, SAN TA1Dear Santa (I assume I can call you that after all this time),yep, it's that time of year again. You'll remember me, no doubt, from the now-infamous letter of last year in which I begged you for a body-double since, more than anything else, I craved being able to have a full-night's sleep, and if I had a body-double they … [Read more...]

Finding the Spirit of Christmas: Peace and Goodwill

It's been nine days and I'm already feeling the pain. I refer not to the blog-a-day thing, though I have to say that is challenging. At the moment, juggling the Pocket Dictator, Wonder Hound and kamikaze Dimpled One usually means that I spend all day thinking about posting and most of the evening (after clearing away the daily detritus of primary coloured plastic, half-eaten pretzels and unidentifiable objects smooshed into the carpet then … [Read more...]

The Gallery: The White Stuff

There are some truly artistic photographs at The Gallery this week. A comment I made on one of the pictures made me think of the other photograph I considered submitting for this week's theme of White. I give you, The White Stuff: … [Read more...]

Christmas Countdown: Rudolph please stop here

The Pocket Dictator went to meet 'The Man' this weekend. I refer of course to the man in the red suit. It's all she's talked about for days, and she gabbled excitedly as we patiently waited our turn at the Church Fair Santa's Grotto. So I shouldn't have been surprised that, as soon as we entered the semi-darkness of the Choir Room, every inch of which had been covered with fairy lights, that she became all shy and hid behind my legs. Dimples on … [Read more...]

Top Five Christmas Classics on the Christmas Countdown

Despite being a Radio Two afficionado for, well, ever (did I mention that I have been thirty-something since I was five?) I am often not in the right frame of mind to listen to Sounds of the Sixties on a Saturday morning, not least this morning after walking the halls with Dimples for three hours  last night. Instead I turned over to some other channel and found myself listening to the Three Tenors singing Oh Holy Night:It's one of those … [Read more...]
