It's week 50 in The Gallery and for the life of me I cannot believe that a year has gone by since it began, not that I started trying to keep up until recently. It has become such an institution in the section of the Blogosphere I feel most comfortable in that I can't remember a time before it existed. It's testament to the blogversity of the legendary Tara of Cain that she has managed to think up a different topic for each of the last fifty … [Read more...]
Top Five Children’s Earworms
Yesterday I found myself humming The Archers' Theme tune ALL DAY, even when I woke coughing in the middle of the night. Not your standard earworm, I know, but it happens a lot. It's not unusual for me to be humming showtunes or hymns when I wake, and most of the time I'm not aware of it. I recently saw an article listing some of the top Earworm offenders, which included: Lady Gaga's Poker Face The Beatles rendition of O-bla-di … [Read more...]
The First Word
My children are a study in contrasts: one likes Marmite, the other hates it. She eats Peanut Butter which the Marmite-lover can't bear. Dimples has a cheese allergy yet Pocket Dictator will eat Baked Potato with cheese until it comes out of her ears. I had a thought that I would use the word opposite for my Gallery entry this week, in fact. Then I had a better idea, since whilst they are so very different, my Girls also have something in … [Read more...]
Not a Tosser in sight.
Primarily because I unceasingly fail to toss them successfully, I always told people that I couldn't make pancakes. I couldn't bear the humiliation of scraping blobs of semi-cooked batter from ceilings, walls and pans. Then God gave me children. My children lack what seems to be the generally assumed love of the White Stuff bestowed upon most pre-schoolers. I have a friend whose children down two pints each before bed. Yes, each. Mine both … [Read more...]
Zapptastic: in which I bid farewell to my career as a Quinnycaster
Yes, you read right. My six months is up, over, finished. As with the 300+ days that Dimples has been in our lives, we have no idea where the time has gone. Wasn't it yesterday that we were assembling our new Quinny Zapp, bleary eyed from jetlag and the challenge of keeping two smalls occupied on an overnight flights from the States? In that time we have truly given the Quinny Zapp Xtra a run for it's money. It's travelled thousands of … [Read more...]
Things I want my daughters to know
My darling Doodlebugs, I write this as you sit in various states of undress on the sofa. It's a Friday, the beginning of our weekend, and after stuffing our faces with Pink Pancakes we're vegging out in front of CBeebies and contemplating the day ahead. Threeva is exhausted after three full days at nursery, playdates and the general busy-ness of being a nearly-three-year-old. Dimples is delighted unpacking the neatly folded laundry onto the … [Read more...]
Togetherness at The Gallery
Week nights at DG Manor are often tough, and by this hour I am usually counting the minutes until DH walks through the door by this point in the day. Being self-employed, he doesn't have conventional 9-5 working hours (who does these days?) so there is no guarantee that he will see The Girls before they go to bed. Sometimes, despite his best efforts, a few minutes of delay for South Eastern rail is the difference between being able to read … [Read more...]
