Things they don’t teach you in Ante-Natal Class:
- You will feel completely powerless to protect your child even in absolute safety; that there are no words to describe the depth and breadth of feeling of utter terror at your powerlessness in times of acute danger.
- The home you know and love in the country you know and love may suddenly become the seat of all that is evil in the world.
- How to make the impossible decision to abandon all that you know, to leave everything you own behind, and to run.
- Which countries in the world you can rely on to welcome and protect you when you stop.
- The best kind of currency to carry whilst you carry your children away from persecution and/or death.
- How to choose the safest most reliable boat
- How to tread water for hours in the dark, whilst keeping your children’s heads above water
- How to live with the guilt and desolation if you make it. And if they don’t.
- How to hug your five-year-old on her first day of school, to tell her you’ll be back at home time and cannot wait to hear all about it, when across a sea not very far away, the body of a little boy who could have been her future husband lies washed up on a beach with his baby brother.
- How to hold back the tears when you walk past the news stand on your weekly shop when every publication carries a picture of that little boy.
- How to go about your daily life, whilst mere miles from the solid front door of your brick built house, children like yours are living in homes constructed from tarp and pallets in the largest refugee camp in Europe.
- How to do nothing whilst every news report is filled with stories of more children who died because their parents were being parents and trying to protect their children from harm.

Wow. This is incredibly powerful stuff, and brought me to tears. All those families, struggling to survive…it doesn’t bear thinking of.
