An article in a newspaper is responsible for my freezer being filled with cherries. It’s the reason I have three cherry stoners, a cupboard filled with jars of jams and compotes, and why I can’t eat cherries after the end of July. We rent a cherry tree, the fruit from which we get to pick and keep every July. I spend about four days surrounded by boxes of up to 14kg cherries that need quick processing in the heat of the summer.
The point is that I am familiar with adopting a tree and, in return, gaining the fruits from that tree. The brilliant thing about the olive oil you get in return for adopting an Olive Tree with Pomora is that your fruit comes in handy-sized 250ml containers that take up far less freezer space than a tree’s worth of olives. Not only that but you get sent the oils in Quarterly packs throughout the year, each pack containing a different blend or flavour of oils, so there’s always something to look forward to.
When you sign up with Pomora- it costs £29 per quarter with a minimum of two quarters required to begin with- they send you an Adoption Pack which consists of an Adoption Certificate and an Adoption Booklet of information about your tree. In addition you get regular updates from your local farmer about your tree and how the season is progressing. You can even go and visit your tree, stroke it, and whisper encouraging words to it, meet your farmer and find out more about supporting local olive oil producers. You know your tree, you know your producer. It’s what food is all about know: knowing where your food came from.
The team at Pomoro sent me a Winter Quarter selection, filled with Olio Nuovo, an unfiltered oil that is bottled fresh after harvest. It has a distinctive verdant colour and taste so clean that you have no need to cook with it. It goes well on salads and my girls love dipping their dough balls into a bowl of oil, but I love it even more using it in the three ingredient dough balls I serve with them.
If you’ve got any more questions about Adopting an Olive Tree, check out the Frequently Asked Questions on the Pomora site. You can find Pomora on twitter and facebook.
Disclosure: I was sent a trio of oils in return for sharing the Pomora adopt-an-Olive-Tree scheme which I think is a fabulous idea.

Oh that really is a clever idea. I couldn’t see on the site but are the trees located in the UK or abroad? x

In Italy @leanne, so far as I am aware. I think it’s a splendid idea, particularly for people who want to grow things but don;t have a garden!
