Floral Monogram Craft for a girl’s bedroom

This time last year I was counting glue-gun-related burns and counting pompoms as I made a Pom Pom Monogram for Dimples’ Dora Birthday party. After the party it got to hang in pride of place above her bed- a two-foot-tall homage to the small person that puts us all in our place. Her sister wanted a Floral Monogram.

It took a few months until a delivery arrived in a conveniently-sized box so that I could begin again with glue-gun burns. Once I had the basic structure of the cardboard monogram, I covered it in Papier Mache and left it overnight to dry on the back of the Aga.

I covered the side and rear with some fabulous washi paper that I found at the equally fabulous Dutch store Hema, cursing the curves of the letter C all the while. Curves are so much harder to paper over neatly and I kept getting bits stuck on the double-sided sticky tape. Then I took a trip down my local high street and picked up handfuls of artificial flowers, the heads from which I mercilessly hacked from their stems. I also kept a few of the fake leaves to break up the floral impact.

Finally I settled down for an evening of watching Castle episodes on Netflix and some serious glue-gunning, smothering the top of the monogram with flowers of all sizes and colours in a random fashion. As it wasn’t so wide, I started at one end, working across to the other. Then when it had dried, I went back and filled any gaps I missed. I added a few leaves and floral offcuts from the flowers to balance the look.

It fits in with the colours of her room, and I am hoping it will last  into her next room makeover, which may come sooner than I expect if LBG keeps taking my magazines and reading them late into the night.

Should you be interested the walls are painted in Farrow and Ball Calamine. The dot wall decals were bought from Not On The High Street. The bedframe is a Julian Bowen Barcelona, and the lamp was an eBay purchase.
