Pumpkins are traditionally carved at this time of year with a spooky theme to reflect the season. I confess that is not really our bag. Last year, because our girls love hearts more than anything, our Pumpkins looked like this:
(That was our door number by the way)
That’s relevant to pumpkin carving this October because World Vision are asking you to carve a heart into a pumpkin this Halloween and display it in your window as a lantern of hope for children around the world living in fear. You can find all the details about the night of hope on the World Vision website which also includes a prize draw for a free cookery class with celebrity chef, Lesley Waters, if you take part by downloading the PDF.
This year, apart from the heart which we have yet to carve, we wanted to do something to reflect our new home. It’s not possible to do our door number because we no longer have one, so I cast around for ideas whilst I was sitting at the kitchen table this morning, and found the perfect picture right under my elbows. Our new kitchen tablecloth is covered in chickens. It was bought as a nod to our new status as chicken-keepers. So I thought that the chicken would be the perfect thing to carve.
I traced one of the chickens from the tablecloth, then made some adjustments to simplify the details. Then I stuck the image to the pumpkin and carved out the design: I cheekily put the chicken inside an egg-shaped cut-out as a nod to the age-old debate. If you need more guidance, check out my handy How to Carve a Pumpkin tutorial.
This is my entry into a Pumpkin Carving competition on behalf of Family Investments.
I was sent the money to buy my pumpkin for the purposes of writing this post.

That looks amazing. I should draw on paper next time, maybe that would give my haunted house equally big windows, haha x

Wow that’s an amazing pumpkin! My skills managed a smiley cat last year – I think I could try a heart this year though!
