My children both attend a school with a fairly rigorous uniform list. The colours are specified right down to what the children wear in their hair. This was challenging enough in their last school, whose colours were yellow and grey- not colours that could be bought off the shelf from all good uniform retailers, it would seem- but from September their colours are purple and grey or black.
I do not know a single five-year-old girl who considers black to be the height of chic. I’m not saying they aren’t out there but my Girls? They are all about the purple. And purple is not so easy to find.
So I’ve been doing a bit of hair band- they were called bobbles in my day, but band seems to be the consensus, or thingy, which is a word I make use of frequently- pimping, hence {Back to School} Pimp my hair bands. The favourite yellow ones were bought from Boots I think, at a cost of around $2.50 (don’t know why there’s a dollar sign: I do, of course mean GB pounds) for two. Daylight robbery, according to Mrs Lisa.
So I have purchased a few lengths of ribbon and a bundle of purple hairbands and have copied the original, making six for roughly the same price.
They are so simple too:
- Buy ribbons in whichever colourway you choose.
- Get different widths or styles of ribbon to vary the look, and cut into 30cm pieces.
- Gather up four of the ribbons: in this case I had two narrow strips of the same design and two others.
- Tie all four pieces around the hair band in a single knot. This may be enough. It rather depends on the quality of the ribbon I have found. For more security you could add a blob of hot glue from a glue gun into the knot once tied.
And that’s all it takes. Great saving. Happy Girls. Mum Wins.

We call them “waggles” in our house – because with your hair in pigtails it goes wiggle-waggle. Our school uniform was yellow and it was always so difficult to find things the right colour – it was always red or blue available in the shops!

Tricky, isn’t it Keynko. Loved the ‘waggles’ 🙂
Ohhh pretty! My little girl (age 2) seems to loose hair clips and bobbles on a daily basis, I’m yet to discover where they all go and seem to be spending a lot in boots on hair gear!
I hope your girls enjoy starting their new school! (With very pretty hair!)

Thanks Emma- I reckon bobbles get sucked into a vortex with odd socks!
Great idea, my little girl will like that! X thanks Kelly x
NO problem Anna.
