It’s been a dreadful year for growing things: the weather has put everything back. So it was only last week that we finally got round to dealing with our spring planting. In particular, we planted some sunflower seeds- provided by Center Parcs- as part of this month’s Tots 100 Challenge whilst also incorporating recycling as an Earth Day Activity.
The planting also has pertinence because 22nd April is Earth Day, something we try to mark each year, to remind the Girls about the precious resources that we have. So we used some of our epic recycling stash to plant the seeds. Firstly we took empty toilet roll tubes and used them as seedling pots- folding one end in on itself to create a pot, then filling with soil.
The soil scoop was easy to cut out from a plastic milk bottle, which worked unexpectedly well as I discovered that the lidded end fitted perfectly into the top of each toilet roll tube. This meant we could use it to funnel the soil into the pots: we scooped a little, tapped the scoop, then angled the unlidded end into the pot to allow the soil into the pot. Unexpected bonus.
