We all know that times are tough: recent cuts have already forced huge numbers of families to tighten their belt. More families will struggle this year to pay for food, heating and the other basics for their children as prices continue to increase. And if you play the game on the Children’s Society website, you will quickly find that it is impossible to escape the poverty trap.
The Fair and Square Campaign has a simple plan: a free school meal for every child in poverty, including those in working families.
Free school meals ensure children from the lowest income households get at least one nutritious meal every day. And yet currently 700,000 children in poverty in England are not entitled to receive them according to children’s charity The Children’s Society.
The introduction of the new benefit system, Universal Credit, from October 2013, is a watershed moment for free school meals. This is a real opportunity to make a change that’s fair for everyone, and extend free school meals to all families in poverty.

There shouldn’t be starving children in a First World Country. There shouldn’t have to be starving children anywhere in the world.
