The holidays have arrived: I have no doubt that I’ll soon be regretting my joy at the arrival of the vacation, but for the moment The Little Misses are so exhausted they are sleeping until 8am and loving slow starts to the day. We are also back on track with Dimples’ potty training after her being ill so things are at last moving forward. So what happened this week?
Sunday, inevitably, was a sunny day. I say inevitable because we were homeward-bound first thing to make a party for LBG’s school-friend, so of course it was sunny: we weren’t around for beach time! I managed to leave the party without keys, so came back 20 minutes later and ordered food to keep Dimples and I occupied whilst LBG and Daddy partied. Needless to say, Dimples crashed the fun and was fawned upon by the little girls. On Monday we spent time with Granny M before she ditched us for her other grandchildren (can you hear me scoff? After all I do for her! Hi Mum!!) We girls had a movie night, watching Mr Popper’s Penguins whilst Daddy went out for dinner.
On Tuesday there was the all-important delivery of windows and doors for the man-shed, plus a sunny morning in the garden with paint. Unsurprisingly, my girls ended up naked. By the afternoon the weather had turned so we retreated inside to yet more penguins. Then I got to go to dinner with my husband, followed by the David Hockney exhibition at the Royal Academy. It was wonderful to talk about art and drink wine with dinner and *gasp* wear heels. Although the late night meant that Wednesday was a Caffeine+ day: I needed all the coffee I could get. LBG got a haircut. We did some shopping and had lunch, made floral coronets and had a lovely Mother-Daughter morning, then the Godlings came to play for a while before Daddy came home with Chinese Food. No cooking: what a great way to end the day.
After delivering Dimples to nursery on Thursday morning with a full Fisher Price farm set, for which we no longer have room, LBG and I headed to Wimbledon for a playdate with Red Ted and Pipsqueak. I chatted with Maggy and we shared Pinterest tips before we headed home to deliver The Wonder Hound to kennels ahead of our holiday: after jumping out of the window and harassing the lambs, we wisely decided to leave her behind on this year’s farm trip. Once my tired Little Misses were bathed and bedded, I got to pack like the kind of lunatic who has left her packing until the last minute.
Friday morning dawned and we set off, joining the slow-moving Good Friday traffic heading towards Suffolk. It was a sunny day, the girls slept on the way and we spent all our money on petrol and milk-shakes [to paraphrase that classic folk song ‘Didn’t We Have a Lovely Time the Day We Went to….’] But we arrived in time to feed the lambs and run around with friends and we fell into bed as you do on the first day of the holiday: happy and exhausted (and maybe a little tipsy.)
Unsurprisingly it was raining the next morning. It was cold. More lamb feeding followed- in our pjs, no less- before we took a trip to the picturesque town of Aldeburgh, where we looked in Art Galleries, queued for fish and chips, and froze as we stood on the pavement watching the children eat their ice-creams. Back in the warmth of the cottage, the fire stoked and the coffee hot, the children played nicely together whilst the grown-ups napped or read, until the next lamb feed and bedtime.
