This could unquestionably be the shortest review of all time. Should you buy The Land of Sometimes? Yes, you should.
Of course, if you want to know why, I am happy to tell you. It is charming, uplifting, utterly compelling. The story of Alfie and Elise visiting The Land of Sometime has captured our hearts. We three Girls look forward to getting in the car so that we can sing along to Little Twink, Holly and George and The Electric Volcano. We know all the words.
And yet, as a parent, there is something about the clever mix of story and song that I have never come across on a children’s CD. It’s almost as though the appeal to children is inadvertent. The story weaves in and around the original songs- one for each of the spectacularly eccentric characters- of four seasons passing in a day, and two children on a grand adventure. Each of the songs is refreshingly different from the one before: the varying styles, from Reggae to Folk to New Orleans Jazz.
There’s not a hint of the cliched, repetitive rhymes we knew as children and now sing in our sleep. And even the packaging is exquisite. It makes me happy to get in the car. It makes me look forward to long journeys. So you see you really should buy it.
The CD is for sale through the Land of Sometimes website or Amazon. You can find Land of Sometimes on Facebook and twitter.
