In order to smooth the transition from having a bedroom to herself to sharing it with her little sister, I wrecklessly promised LBG that we could redecorate. In true LBG style she has been giving it considerable thought and decreed that there must be butterflies. And some other stuff, but mainly butterflies. As I have yet to inform the DH of the impending remodel, I thought that I needed to soften the blow by introducing a few small bits and pieces that give the idea.
So I went out and bought the largest green rug I could find.
OK, not the largest, but a good sized-rug that would cover a chunk of floor. Where from? Ikea, of course. Dimples came with me, sitting on most of the rugs to give them a thorough testing, and she decreed this particular one to be just right (although I may have bribed her with chocolate. I also gave her chocolate to get her back in the trolley. I am a Bad Mother.) She then helped me choose a selection of fake flowers.
The next day whilst the Kidlings were both at school, I fired up the glue gun and got to work. Taking all the heads off the flowers was a) rather easier than I expected and b) wonderfully therapeutic. I scattered them across the rug until I was happy with their positioning: I wanted them around the edge to look meadow-like, but leave the centre free so that The Girls could sit and play or read without getting a flower stuck to their bottoms.
Once I was satisfied with the arrangement, I glued each of the flowers to the rug, pushing them firmly into the base of the rug, rather than just the pile, so that they will stay firmly attached even when vacuumed.
And that’s it: the not-so-subtle beginning of a transformation. I’ll keep you posted as the changes occur.

My Ikea rug also curls up on the corner like this one. I fixed it with velcro tape onto the floor. Nice job– this is so pretty.

this is so super cute! what a great idea!
ooooh I LOVE that! Brilliant. My girls would love it. I wish I lived near an IKEA! xx
Thanks Emma- I’m quite pleased with myself!
Aw, this is lovely. I do love a good Ikea hack!
Thats really gorgeous, inspired! Im tempted to customise our bathmats 🙂
Go for it Being a Mummy!
Thus far it has survived the vacuum without major damage (6 weeks).
Absolutely beautiful, you *so* know that the vacuum will suck them up right? What are you going to be doing with the other room?
I love this!! It’s very simple but very effective!
Don’t think my son would be too happy if I tried it with his room though!
Simply sublime! I seriously may have to do this for Ella’s room. We’ve given her a new “big girl” room in the last few months and the floor could use a bit of jazzing up. And we love IKEA so what could be better! Now, the big question…how much was the rug??
🙂 Karin
Thanks Karin- don’t know why the link to the rug didn’t work but I’ve fixed it now, I think!
