I’ve seen these easy fire-breathing dragons around, particularly because it is the Chinese Year of the Dragon, and I thought they’d be perfect for making at playgroup tomorrow to acknowledge St David’s Day.
And they really are simple. Let me show you how to make a Welsh Dragon:
1. Using a craft knife, cut a pair of upside-down-U-shapes towards the lip end of a paper cup. These will eventually fold up to become your dragon’s eyes. For what it’s worth, I bought green paper cups but you could use any colour. Or paint plain paper cups.
2. Again, with the craft knife, cut the base from the cup so that you have, essentially, a green toilet roll!
3. Fold up the U-shapes you cut in step 1. Stick googly eyes, or white stickers that have black eyeballs coloured in on them, onto the shapes.
4. At the opposite end of your cup, stick two pompoms– mine are glittery- to make dragon nostrils.
5. Stick strips of tissue paper to the inside of the nostril-end of your paper cup. I used yellow and orange. You could use red too.
6. Blow through the paper cup from the eye-end. The tissue paper strips will hopefully flutter so that you have your very own fire-breathing dragon.

what a fantastic idea and lovely to use for St Georges day as well! Thanks for sharing!
Thanks Pip- it hadn’t occurred to me to use them for St George’s Day, but now I shall. It’ll go with the tabards we made last year!
