Although Thanksgiving is not a British holiday, we have American family. To help LBG and her Dimpled sister keep an association with them, we made some turkeys this week.
It was clear autumn day and The Girls and I picked up some leaves from the garden, which put me in a mind of a turkey craft I had seen around the internet somewhere.
I drew around each girl’s foot onto the inner side of a carton of some kind, then cut them out. This would be the head of the turkey.
Next, we arranged the leaves ‘behind’ the turkey in a fan shape, adding a few ‘feathers’ that I had cut from various bits of scrap paper and old art. Once we were happy with the placement, everything was glued into place, with the footprint (heel end at the top) on top.
Next we glued some small leaves and twigs as feet, two googly eyes, beak and waddle (both of which I cut from the cardboard that was left over.) Finally I covered the whole lot with cling-film (to stop glue from getting onto everything) and left it sandwiched between two hefty books until dry.
Finally, LBG and I worked out how to spell turkey, and stamped the letters underneath our Gobbles. Now we have to get DH to decide which one to pardon on Thanksgiving (probably my favourite West Wing episode ever.)
Happy Thanksgiving!

I’m writing because I run a sensory site and am looking for great ideas for Thanksgiving. And as any parent, we’re looking for terrific Thanksgiving crafts and ideas for kids with Sensory Processing Disorder and on the Autism Spectrum. Would you add a link to a craft idea or two on our blog? Here’s the link to share and get more traffic to your site…
