Within an hour of crossing the finish line at my very first half-marathon, I was walking through my front door. The house was silent, DH having wisely taken The Girls to the Beach House for the weekend to allow me to recharge, and I fell into bed fully clothed and slept until noon. The fun started when I tried to get out of bed, and found that I couldn’t turn over. The hips that I have spent eighteen long months trying to get back into shape had regressed and I was plunged back into the land of SPD.
The consolation was that it wasn’t as painful as when I had been pregnant, and within a few days I was back to being able to walk unaided. I sit and consider how much worse a state I could have been in if I hadn’t spent so much time training, and I cannot thank the amazing Ellie enough for bullying me back to health. I have been thinking that perhaps I might do the walk again next year, so that I continue to have a motivator in getting out and staying mobile. Even with the walking stick, it was entirely worth it.
I am immensely proud of myself, and Georgia and Brigid, who were inspired by me to do the walk in honour of people close to them. It was an emotional evening, a balmy evening (even at 3 o’clock in the morning it was still warm out), a barmy evening (some of those costumes…) and a satisfying evening. Thanks to your support, I and my fellow walkers raised over Β£1.4 million to helpp find a cure for Cancer.
