How to make saltdough Diwas for Diwali

Today is Diwali, the Hindu celebration of truth and light.

kneading the glitter into the dough

Having time on our Half-term hands, LB and I thought we’d have a go at making some Diwas from salt-dough. I’ve been meaning to try Thinly Spread’s super-white-cornflour dough for some time so was delighted when LBG decided she wanted to make pretty lights after watching them being made on CBeebies.

shaping the cornflour dough

Half an hour later, and we had a small ‘dispute’ about the shaping of the vessels. Annoyingly, LBG had a much better idea. I assume she has inherited my creative genes, and possibly a my stubborn streak too. She had very precise ideas about how they should look, so I just did as I was told. We sprinkled the dough with liberal amount of glitter, to catch the light, and free-formed a variety of vessels in which to place some more of my ‘fake tealights’ which worked so well with the Jack-o-lantern nightlights.

Glitter-speckled salt dough

After 40 minutes or so in a low oven (they were thicker in places than Chris’ so I left them a little longer in the oven), I left them to cool before we lined them up in the window with their more Pagan ledge-fellows. No painting required!!

Definitely Michelle- I even thought that they’d make good trinket trays too.
Thanks for the invitation Beth- I’ll be there!
      Glad you like them Maggy.
Those battery operated tealights are fab, Amanda. And LBG can operate them by herself!

Oh what a lovely idea! I’ve made lots of salt dough of the years, but never put glitter in it…. will have to rectify that! So easy for the kids too – perfect!

Thanks so much for linking up!
