These hands, tanned and cracked and dry, in desperate need of some TLC and a little polish.
These hands that have washed up in hot soapy water the detritus of the day.
These hands that have changed nappies and emptied potties, that have mopped up sick and given Calpol.
These hands that hold my growing babies close when they cry as the nurse pricks them with needles, takes blood, innoculates.
These hands that mix and stir and blend and bake. that pull ingredients down from shelves because I feel like it.
These hands that turn on washing machines and hoovers.
These hands that empty dishwashers.
These hands that reach into my purse for a credit card.
These hands that turn pages of books and magazines.
These hands that point at the television to show my Girls other worlds.
These hands that type and tweet and message; that text and surf and channel hop.
These hands that change gear, that refill the fuel, that fasten seatbelts.
These hands that can do all these things by virtue of birth: these First World hands.
I am grateful for these hands.
Just a gentle reminder, written as part of the ongoing #passiton campaign promoted by Save the Children, to sign the petition. Chris at Thinly Spread is on the ground in Mozambique promoting the need for a fully-funded vaccination programme for the World’s poorest children.
In this day and age no child should die from a disease that could be prevented by immunisation.

the first gallery entry that has made me really stop and think
these first world hands are so priviledged in comparison to those in the third world

I love this post. What a reminder of all we have in comparison with other countries. Also a great acknowledgement of an individual woman and mother and all her skills and strengths
