Home Made Mother’s Day

So, you’ve got about 48 hours left, Dads. I have to say that you are in luck because if there’s one thing a Mother appreciates, after lie-ins and chocolates, it’s stuff that has been hand-crafted by their precious offspring. So you still have time to whip up something to bring tears to the eyes of the woman who gave birth to your children. Or to you.

For example, this tulip card is as simple as making a handprint and drawing a stem on it. No, really, that’s all you need: a hand, some paint and a folded piece of printer paper. Dip small person’s hand in paint, print onto paper, paint/draw on a stem and voila, one masterpiece to display for eternity on the mantlepiece.

If you are skilled in the kitchen, you could whip up some flower biscuits: just make a batch of plain biscuit dough, and cut out flower shapes (you can use a cutter, or else use a template made from card to cut around). Cut a small circle from the middle of the flower (I used the fat end of an piping nozzle.) Put some boiled sweets in a ziplock/freezer bag and bash the hell out of them. Take the broken sweet pieces and fill the hole in the centre of the hole. Then bake in the oven for ten minutes until a) the biscuits are done and b) the sweets have melted. Monitor them carefully. Leave to cool on the tray for a few minutes, then transfer to a cooling tray.

For your own mother, you might want to try a slightly more grown up card, like this one. Trace a simple shape, such as this flower,Β  onto some plain card, then use a pin tp prick holes through the card in the shape of the design. I found a piece of floral wrapping paper and stuck it to the front of a plain card, then mounted the pin-prick design on top of that. I added a few small cut-out details to the edge for interest.

Flower lollipops, like the ones here are a fun craft too. You need: cake cases and lollipops. Put three or four cake cases one on top of the other and poke a hole through them with a skewr. Thread the lollipop through the hole, squoosh the cake cases around the lollipop ‘stem’ and hold in place with a small piece of sellotape.
