The Good Life is hosting the fortnightly #BMB Carnival with the theme of The Good Life. I assume that this particular theme didn’t take a vast amount of thinking about on her part, but it has on mine. I couldn’t really boil down the rapidly mushrooming thoughts in my head to describe the essence of the Good Life as I see it. It also made me hum the Theme Tune and call the DH Gerry for the rest of the evening. I even dug out the dress I wore for our Retro New Years’ Feast.
I have labelled us as Margot and Gerry rather than Tom and Barbara because we don’t grow anything, other than strawberries and weeds. Neither do we keep livestock, unless you consider the Wonder Hound. She considers herself to be one of the family, but there are days when I would happily keep her in the garden. I drive a car, shop at Waitrose when I can get away with it, and like to have the heating on when it is cold. Which is not to say I wouldn’t kill for Barbara’s legs, but what makes our life good? I had to make a list to help write the post and then I thought why? I should just publish the list as it is rather than weaving it into a piece of prose. Without further ado, here’s what I think makes my life good.
- Fresh coffee. Ideally being able to consume an entire cup whilst still warm.
- Croissants, also warm, on Saturday mornings.
- Sleep. Uninterrupted sleep.
- The Weekly lie-in my husband gave me for Christmas.
- Baking. I love baking. I find it therapeutic.
- The smiles on the faces of my daughters when they wake.
- Watching my precious girls sleep. Sleeping children are a study in perfectioon.
- Lunch with my husband on a weekday.
- Matching underwear.
- Watching My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding in the middle of the day when I should be doing chores.
- Clean bedding.
- Having breakfast as a family at the weekend.
- Roast Chicken, especially with crisp roast potatoes.
- Cuddles. There rae never too many cuddles to be had.
- The smell of my baby’s hair.
- Blankets. There is nothing better than curling up on a sofa and having a blanket to hand to pull over you so that you don’t get cold.
- Painting and making things with my children.
- Realising that I have taught them things.
- People stopping you in the street to tell you how beautiful or well-behaved or polite or intelligent your children are.
- Getting lovely comments on my blog.
- Champagne.
- Cocktails on a school night.
- Laughter. Laughing at DH’s jokes, giggling with the girls, roaring at comedy programmes and sometimes even live.
- A night out.
- Having friends to stay for the weekend and staying up late to catch up with them.
- Tearing pictures out of magazines and sticking them in a file for ‘The Future’.
- Being there for a friend.
- Planning our family’s future.
- Doing something kind for a stranger.
- Music, singing, dancing.
I am lucky to have everything I could ever want, but what makes my life good is not the things you can buy, but the moments, the smells, the sounds, the feelings. What would you add to this list of simple pleasures?

Just popped over from the carnival – that's a wonderful list and I agree with so many of them – cuddles and the smell of your baby's head can't be beaten π That was a real feel-good post – thank you so much!

Such a lovely list. I have a similar list and I look at it when I'm having a bad day, it never fails to make me feel better!
What a very lovely list, I totally agree with them all. π
A superb list, they most definatly all do make a good life. I might just try to watch BFGW gtomorrow instead of doing the chores once the girls go to school! lol
