Christmas Countdown Day Three: Toddler Law

Which shall henceforth be known as Toddle-law (see what I did there? It’s amazing what you think of when walking the halls with a small child in the wee small hours of the morning.)

Toddle-Law Number 3, which states that:
any weather is good weather for ice-cream. The need for
ice-cream is inversely proportionate to the outside temperature.
We didn’t get out of the house yesterday because nursery was closed and the snow was too deep to make me want to try and get out and about with a pushchair. It snowed pretty much all day too, which made the girls reluctant to want to go outside. So I had the challenge of keeping a Toddler and a Crawler entertained all day whilst inside. One of the many activities we did was make our first ever Snow Ice-Cream. Well, if life gives you snow…..
  • 250 ml (1 cup) milk
  • 125 ml (1/2 cup) sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 5 – 7 cups snow*

Mix together milk, vanilla, and sugar. Stir until the sugar dissolves. Slowly add the snow, stirring constantly, until it is thick. Add a splash of chocolate sauce and some sprinkles, and enjoy!

Mixing the milk

Bowl of snow

Master-craftsperson!

I tinkered with the recipe this morning and came up with a chocolate version:

  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Vanilla Essence
  • 1 standard bar of dark chocolate (150g)
  • 5-7 cups of snow

Break chocolate into pieces and put in a pan with the other ingredients, then melt over a low heat. Or you could microwave it. Leave to cool, then add snow until thick as above!

*You want the fluffy stuff, not the heavy packed stuff. And, particularly if you have a dog, make sure it’s white! I had to go out for ours of course, not that it was hard. I simply opened the back door, reached down with the bowl and scooped. Didn’t even need my wellies!

The Christmas Countdown Challenge continues at Cafebebe….go have a read!

In know- dogs do add the Russian Roulette element of risk to anything snow-based. Ice-cream was good though!

I love the advice for dog owners, always remember my Dad saying to me "Never eat yellow snow" πŸ™‚

What a great idea though, (the ice cream that is not the yellow snow!)
