I am the proud owner of a new (to me, anyway. Yet another eBay purchase.) desk and matching chair. DH has, begrudgingly, made space for it in the nerve centre that is the study, now that the Pocket Dictator* has discovered the laptop. More than discover the laptop, she is some kind of child-genius who can circumnavigate a supposedly child-proof computer programme which is meant to lock down your computer and prevent little people from emailing gibberish to your clients, or delete important documents, or open dozens of windows and actually locks the keyboard down so that you can’t use it! The net result is that I will have a rolltop desk and the laptop, which used to live in the sitting room and sit on my knee periodically throughout the day and therefore invite little fingers to destroy things, will now reside in the study. Thus I shall have to spirit myself away to the study to write and surf and buy random stuff on eBay. It could mean that I am more productive because I have to find time in my day to do these things. It could also mean that I spend less money online, which I’m sure DH would welcome.
I don’t get the time that I used to to spend doing the things that I used to. Now that PD sleeps less during the day and walks and chatters and orders me around in a Duracell-bunny-like fashion, there is precious little time in the day for me to sit and get work done, or to make calls or to buy things online. She has a very active social life: nursery on a Monday, Jo Jingles on a Tuesday, Playgroup and supper ‘out’ on a Thursday and on Wednesdays and Fridays we have playdates, go on trips or visit daddy. She has a nap between 1 and 3, which was a useful tool for getting things done before but now that babydeux is a work in progress I go to bed when PD does. I did have my work lined up in the sitting room and was thus able to monitor her playtime whilst emailing, making calls, dealing with correspondence and all the other things that have to get done. It doesn’t happen now that she’s a walking talking little person- when I realised that I spent more of my day chasing after her to get back important bits of paper that she felt needed to put in the dog’s bowl or claiming back pens she has somehow managed to separate from their lids, I knew it was time for drastic action. It still amuses me that I thought nothing would change when I had a baby!
So the desk is installed, and I have tested the rolltop with the PD and it seems to be holding it’s own. Good thing too- there’s currently no room in there for my laptop as I have been buying up bits and pieces for a Pumpkin Party I am having (for PD naturally) next month and have been hiding everything out of sight in the new desk. I figure the laptop will make it’s way out of the sitting room and into the study eventually, probably after a significant PD/work- related disaster, but until then, I have an excellent place to hide mess when people come to visit!
*Pocket Dictator will henceforth be the name of the baby formerly known as ‘Squeaky’. The squeaking was quite endearing, but the little Madam now operates the Fawlty-Towers-style philosophy: I may not be able to speak your language but if I just shout really loud in mine, I shall make you understand me!

lovely desk and chair! I am the same, I have organised a little office area in my kitchen and I can now do stuff online and keep an eye on the monkeys
BTW there is an award for you at mine x
Very nice, as geeky as I am I have never learned to use EBay but my daughter has me going on Craig's list (just no psychotic murders please). yikes.
The desk looks lovely.
That's a beautiful desk
AND I love PD for your LO – mine seems to subscribe to a similar philosophy – also accompanied by diva tantrums if whatever it is that she's asking for isn't delivered immediately !
Thanks PHM- I shall have to get my thinking cap on!
Thanks too Lady Macleod. I am a huge eBay fan. It's not good for your bank balance.
MAM- tantrums, oh my yes. I thought they came with the terrible twos. Apparently they come with walking and wanting to do stuff.
Very enjoyable post, reminds me of the days I spent chasing Amy round the house. It hasn't changed…!!
