What the blog?!

In the parlance of Facebook- which, by the way, is the work of the devil and must be avoided at all costs if you plan on ever getting anything done- I have been poked by the continually pokey Wakeup. I’m supposed to tell you a little bit about myself, which I do anyway on a somewhat random basis, how I came to blog, and why I blog.

It’s not really a question that is simple to answer, since the truth is a terribly vague “I have absolutely no idea”. I had never really come across blogging before Lady Woodvale started when I worked for her. Then I left, set up my own business and assumed I’d have loads of time on my hands and therefore needed a goal. I had turned thirty and worried that I wasn’t this hotshot career girl like most of friends and felt I needed a purpose. My mother has always nagged at me to ‘be a writer’ but I never had any idea whether I could, or indeed should. So I decided that blogging would be a good way of finding out- since it is quite anonymous, if you want it to be, I figured I could have a bash and see where it took me. I never really expected to have any readers, or indeed to find blog-pals with whom I check in daily. For the first few months of ‘working from home’ when I felt quite alone and worried that I’d done the right thing, that contact made a powerful difference to my self-esteem.

Then a friend who is, I hope, moving to Canada one day soon, wondered what she’d do without me- since I am the person she asks about cooking and cleaning- and I told her she could find what she needed on my blog. It’s called Domestic Godd-esque since I don’t for one minute consider myself to be Nigella (who is a goddess) or Anthea (who is a cockroach). But I have a go. And I don’t think I do too badly. I write about me, since it’s the subject I know most about, and since I have spent my whole life wanting to be some 1950′s-style housewife (I don’t want the 1950′s male chauvinist attitudes to a woman’s place or anything, I just want the aprons!) I write about my family, past experiences, friends; about my domestic life with DH, who I love with all my heart. I write about books that I have read, restaurants I enjoyed eating at. I write about guilty pleasures that show my true colours, but that I could never admit in public (ironic, given that this blog is in the public domain.) And I write if I have useful housecleaning tips, or great recipes that I want to share. In short I write about the things that fill my head on a daily basis. Although it has to be said that I don’t write on a daily basis at the moment since work and DH-working-from-home (still campaigning for wireless and a laptop all of my very own) conspire against me.

Some (mad) people, really enjoy reading my little blog, which is the biggest thrill. Some, sadly, are offended. But I don’t write to offend or upset. I have spent my whole life trying to please everyone…I love mothering. It’s the one thing I am really good at. I write lighthearted fluffy stuff that could only be on the shelf in Waterstone’s next to Kerry Katona’s new book, or at least that’s my intention. I want to amuse and possibly offer up some advice, tips or recipes. But the main reason I write is for myself. I love my life and everyone in it, but there are some days when even the most-loved people drive you crackers. And on days like that, I can read back through my blog and remind myself about the good things. Or I can write.

Now I’m supposed to pass this on….I’m curious to read about the reasons for CJ, Gwen and Nunhead Mum taking up blogging…

That was interesting reading, Kelly. I love your recipes, by the way.

Thanks for that! I shall get down to it this week and reveal all. Not that “all” is very exciting. Great reading your reasons though, and do you really want an apron??!!

You can never have too many aprons CJ! Looking forward to reading yours. Hope you had a good break.

Wakeup- thanks. I have to say I really enjoy reading your blog. It has to be said that sometimes you make my family look ‘normal’- almost!
